Cultivating Compassion, p 6
We can experience this. We should practice this. We need to cultivate compassion for ourselves and begin by focusing on ourselves, recognizing and understanding our own experience of suffering. To see that we are currently the servants to afflictive emotions, recognizing and developing the wish to be free from the experience of suffering, that is what we can call self-compassion. It's a very important step in the cultivation of compassion.
With that in mind, let's put this into practice. When we meditate, let's bring forth the idea that our minds are under the power of the afflicted emotions and because of this, we are experiencing suffering. This is the root, that our minds are under the sway of the negative emotions. Recognize this and have compassion for ourselves; let us wish to be free from that, and allow ourselves to experience what it's like to be free from the power of the negative emotions. This is the experience of self-compassion that we are trying to cultivate. In this meditation, cultivate self-compassion, the wish to be free from the negative emotions. If we experience peace, then let us rest in the experience of peace, the inner peace that comes about through the liberation of the negative emotions.
